Go Find Yourself

I hate that look people give you.

You know the one I’m talking about, the look they give you after you just explained what you want to do when you graduate in 97 days.

You didn’t say “I want to find a job!!!” so I guess you didn’t answer correctly.

Instead, if you’re me, you said “I want to travel. I seriously just want to go everywhere that I can. I am applying to a graduate program in London and I hope that I get into it and then I will live there for a year and completely immerse myself in another culture.”

Then the person will probably say something along the lines of…”Didn’t you just go to Australia? Was that not enough?”

No, it wasn’t.

Then they might say something along the lines of “Why do you want to leave America? America is the best.”

I am well aware of how wonderful America is…and do you know what made me realize how wonderful America is? Leaving America. That’s right, I learned the most about my home by leaving it. For the first time in my life I was able to look at America through different eyes.

I feel extremely privileged to have grown up in the United States of America. I have so many opportunities that many other people my age were never given or will never be able to have. But I also realized something else, there’s a WHOLE WORLD out there. There are countless cultures and ways of thinking that I have yet to experience.

I am 21 years old about to graduate college and I have absolutely no idea what I want to do with my life, I’ve said that numerous times.

However, I DO know that traveling across the world to Australia and opening my eyes and mind to a myriad of cultures different than my own was the best thing I have ever done in my life.

I want that experience again and again and again as many times as I can and at the end of the day that’s really all that matters.

People won’t always agree with your decisions, you may not always make the right decision…but each decision you make is a learning process. You learn from it whether it was the right decision or the wrong decision. Each decision you make helps you grow as a person.

And the sooner you start making decisions for YOURSELF and not EVERYONE ELSE, you’ll be much happier.

It’s easy to lose yourself in this world. but it’s the journey to finding yourself that makes life worth living.

  1. Well Said, Print this and keep this in your room! Do what you love and forget anyway who judges you for it. In the end you will be happy and they will be doing “what is expected.

I would love your feedback.
