When I think about the time that I have spent in Australia over the past 2 months, my mind starts racing.
Lara (that’s me) has changed drastically during my time here.
When a student studies abroad, it’s not all fun and games. I know what you must be thinking- I’m in Australia practically living on the beach and exploring some of the most beautiful places in the world every weekend, right? But it’s so much more than that.
I left my friends and my family and everything familiar to me to travel LITERALLY across the world to live for 3.5 months with little to no communication with my loved ones back home. I assumed I would make friends and have the time of my life, but there were moments in the first week here that I just wasn’t so sure. I just plunged head first into this experience with little to no thought about it beforehand. And if something went wrong, well there isn’t much I could do about it. I can’t just drive down the road and see my parents. I can’t pick up my phone and call my bestie back home. I was here and I had to dive in and learn how to make it a great experience.
This was never in my plan. Which is why it’s so PERFECT. If you had asked me a year ago what I would be spending my senior year of uni doing- I would have said- and been 100% sure about this: “I’ll still be president of the PRSSA chapter and I’ll be working for the student-run firm on campus. I’ll also have an internship somewhere to ensure that I have a job waiting for me come graduation in May.”
This all seemed fine, it was expected of me. But I didn’t want a “fine” life. I don’t want mediocre. I want the unexpected. I’ve always had a desire to travel, to experience life in 1,000 different ways. So I made a decision, and I left…and it was the best decision of my life.
While being here, I have not only learned more about myself…but I’ve learned so much more about life. My views and perspective about everything in life has been altered in the short time that I’ve been here.
I used to always say “That’s on my list I really want to do that someday.” Well TODAY is someday. What are you waiting for? If you have dreams, CHASE THEM. Don’t ever stop chasing them.
Don’t ever stop exploring and wandering. Travel, travel, and travel some more.
- Talk to people that you never would have talked to.
- Listen to them.
- Put yourself in their shoes.
- Ask questions.
- Immerse yourself in cultures.
- Don’t assume that what you have been taught is correct.
- Do something that scares you.
- Make decisions about your life and don’t second guess it. The more YOU love your decisions- the less you need others to.
I promise you, it will change your life.
My time here has changed my life. I truly believe that THIS is what life is all about.
